can you give me advice about headphones ..?

hi everybody ı am professional drummer from istanbul turkey..
ı am working some pop stars in turkey concert and tour..
but ı have a really big problem..ı want to use headphone for the gig..but ı dont have any idea ..is there any body? using the headphone,and give me advice headphone model..thanks

Is this a live gig? Are you sure you really want to use headphones instead of IEM's?(in ear monitors)


It depends on whatever you want. I've seen the drummer for Earth Wind and Fire play gigs with a crowd over 10,000 with cheap sony wrap around headphones.

If you are doing good paying gigs I would look into something like in these links

For normal can style headphones I like sony MDR-7506's But I've been liking the idea of the vic firth iso ones if they would have better drivers in them. I still use the vic firth ones now just because I dont have to have the level too hot in them to hear everything.

first my english not well sorry..but ı try tell you..yes ı will use live gig..big concert
ı want to use headphone.. ı was try ear monit?r system some concert.. but ı wasnt comfartble..because the bass frakans was not enough for me..
last week ı was watch live aid concert in tv..
some drummers using headphone..
roger taylor..duran duran
nick mason...pink floyd..
then ı decided to try this style headphone and ı dont have a idea..and thanks for your advice..

Here are by far the best that I've ever used. I use the ultraphones.

Those UltraPhones sound pretty nice with 7506 drivers!!

Hi Instanbul, I personally feel like Mickey Mouse with headphones in a live situation, so I use In Ear monitors on stage. I like the Ultimate Ears very much but I am sure there are some great alternatives.

I use the Shure E5 in ear monitors. They have LOTS of bass. They are a 2 way driver, and the sound is always clean. Plus, they cut out the external sound, so it helps protect my ears too.

Also, there are IEMs accessories such as drum-throne bass-frequency / low-end vibration enhancement-kickers, which give you that low-end "thump," one of which is the Aura Shaker [of course, this is a little more of a $ investment]:



Another great IEM, the Etymotic ER-4 Canalphones...

Do a search on both of these if interested.

You can lose the bass in IEM's if the seal is not correct. Make sure you have them sealed right before you decide they do not have the bass you need.

Custom Mold ones will even help more.

Great topic indeed. I have the 3-way system from ultimate ears and don't need an extra sub IMO.

But I would like to know what you guys have on your mix. We have a 16 channel mixer on stage and I can put everything on my ears, which I do but as soft as possible. But is there someone who puts only the instruments / vocals on his ears which he can't hear through his in ears to keep the mix as quiet as possible? Or does it depend on the situation?

And another question. When your kit is sounding great, and you start wearing your in ears and it is suddenly sounding like crap, do you tune your drums again so that it sounds great on your mix too or do you leave it the way it sounds acoustically OK?

Playing drums in a proper way is difficult, but mixing is another difficulty.
